Storm damage roof repair: hail and wind

Houston-area storms bring hail, high wind and heavy rain, sometimes all at once. Damage isn't always visible from the yard, and the longer it goes unchecked, the more likely water gets inside. We inspect, document what we find and repair or replace what's damaged.

Signs of hail damage

Hail damage on shingles is often subtle. Look for:

  • Dark spots or bruises where granules have been knocked off
  • Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout outlets
  • Cracked or split shingles
  • Dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and other metal on the roof
  • Damaged window screens, siding or fences on the same side of the house

Dents on soft metals like gutters and vents are often the easiest clue to spot from the ground. They don't prove the shingles are damaged, but they're a good reason to get the roof checked.

Signs of wind damage

  • Missing shingles, or shingles found in the yard
  • Shingles that are lifted, creased or flapping
  • Exposed nail lines or underlayment
  • Damaged ridge caps and hip shingles
  • Branches or debris that struck the roof

Wind damage often lets water in quickly. If shingles are missing and rain is coming, emergency roof tarping can protect the home until repairs are made.

After the storm

What to do, in order

  1. Stay off the roof

Wet, damaged roofs are dangerous. Look from the ground and from inside.

  2. Photograph what you can see

Damaged gutters, screens, siding, fences, debris and any interior stains. Note the date of the storm. Our after-the-storm checklist has the full list.

  3. Stop active leaks

If water is coming in, call 832-660-9555 for emergency tarping (24/7).

  4. Get an inspection

We document the damage and send a detailed inspection report with an estimate.

  5. Decide on the claim

If you file, your insurer reviews the claim and decides coverage. See the insurance claim guide.

Damage beyond the roof

Hail and wind often damage gutters, siding, windows, screens and fences too. If water got inside, we also handle drywall and ceiling repair after a roof leak. Keeping it with one contractor means one inspection, one estimate and one schedule.

Repair or replace?

Isolated wind damage can often be repaired. Hail damage spread across several slopes usually points to a roof replacement. The inspection report shows which applies to your roof.

Storm damage questions

How soon after a storm should I get my roof inspected?
As soon as practical. Many policies have time limits for reporting damage, and hidden damage can lead to leaks later. Check your policy or ask your insurer about deadlines.
Can you tell whether damage is from hail or just age?
The inspection documents what we see, including the condition of the shingles and metal components. The insurance company makes its own determination on any claim.
Do you handle the insurance claim?
No. You own your claim and make the decisions. We inspect, document the damage and provide an estimate you can share. Our insurance guide explains each step.
Can you pay or waive my deductible?
No. Texas law requires homeowners to pay their deductible, and contractors can't waive or cover it.
